Thinking with sound and audio

Michael Gallagher led this session, exploring how core concepts from sound and audio engineering can become applicable to research.

Acknowledging that academic language is frequently ocular centred (focus, lens, highlight, angle, and so on) we wondered what scope words from sound engineering offered to think differently about research. Words such as;

Resonance

Bandwidth

Minor / major

Distortion

Modulation

Transduction

Amplitude

 We considered the ways in which sound does not have a direction of focus, in the way vision does. The image above shows our group experimentations with how sound waves move through different objects of different thicknesses. We wondered what potential this offers to thinking about hearing beyond the human.
